Thirteen students were welcomed as the newest members of the Emily Ball Chapter of The National Honor Society during its annual induction ceremony at Portsmouth High School, on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022.
Joining the National Honor Society this year are Madison Elaine Ankrom, Olivia Ellen Rene Dickerson, Annabelle Theresa Burke, Beau Matthew Hammond, Maysa Nicole Calvin, Kamryn Alexis Holbrook, Ayonna Lashay Carr, Caden Ryan Kearns, Reagan Forbes Cartee, Katelyn Karris Ramey, Piper Olivia Cunningham, Zachary Andrew Roth, and Alyvia Jane Waughtel.
They were welcomed by current members, Jayden Christopher Duncan, Bradley Michael Liddle, Curbee Ann Morris, Kenneth Otha Sanderlin, Whitney Jane Thuma, Katie Ann Born (president), Sydney Elise Johnson (vice-president), Vincent Mitchell Lonardo (secretary), and Tyler Aaron Duncan (treasurer).
The guest speaker was Dr. Lucas Queen, regional vice-president of Evergreen Life Services, who graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and was a member of the Emily Ball Chapter of the National Honor Society.
“I want you to know that regardless of who you are, you can have an awesome life in the future,” Queen said. “Always remember and appreciate, and I say this with truth, that you are from America’s greatest high school. The Class of 1982 has something to say to this class. When it comes to hope and inspiration and vision for the future and for this high school, you’re it!”
The National Honor Society is a program of the National Association of Secondary Schools. The students selected for membership in the Emily Ball Chapter exhibit excellent scholastic records are active in their school and community, show leadership and live lives of exceptional character. They must have a grade-point average of at least 4.0 on a 5.0 scale. They are selected by a special faculty committee that evaluates the individual student for the traits of exemplary character, outstanding leadership and active service.
The Emily Ball Chapter of The National Honor Society was founded at Portsmouth High School in 1927 in honor of Portsmouth High School graduate and teacher, Emily Ball.
